A port city climbing Mount Carmel, with two universities, the Bahá’í Gardens and the sea below.

Overview

Haifa is Israel’s third-largest city, with 297,082 residents (2024), built on the northern slope of Mount Carmel above the Bay of Haifa. Wikipedia describes over 3,000 years of history in the area, an industrial port under the British Mandate, and a city of Israel since 1948.

The Bahá’í Gardens became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The Technion (founded 1912) and the University of Haifa (1963) are here, and Rambam, the largest hospital in northern Israel, is in Bat Galim.

Living in Haifa

Quality of life

  • Sea, mountain and city together: a 17 km shoreline, 5 km of it beaches, with Mount Carmel National Park above.
  • Better public transport than most of the North: the Carmelit underground (opened 1959, six stations), the Metronit bus rapid transit (2013), six railway stations and the Rakavlit cable car (2022) to the Technion and the University.
  • Rambam, Bnai Zion and Carmel hospitals are in the city, about 4,000 hospital beds in all.

Community

  • Nefesh B’Nefesh describes a veteran English-speaking community and a steady flow of English-speaking olim, with an Anglo olim coordinator.
  • Ahuza, Neve Sha’anan and Kiryat Shmuel are the neighborhoods the guide lists as popular with olim.
  • A multicultural city: Wikipedia’s 2024 figures give 73.1% Jewish, 12.1% Arab and 14.8% other.

Value for money

  • Matam, one of Israel’s oldest and largest business parks, is at the southern entrance; Wikipedia names Apple, Amazon, Intel, IBM, Google and Microsoft among its companies.
  • Not on the 2026 list for the locality tax credit.

Good to know

  • A big city whose neighborhoods differ a lot, from the lower city and Hadar to the Carmel heights. Hebrew Wikipedia gives it a socio-economic cluster of 7 of 10 (2021).
  • The Haifa Bay industrial zone, with nearby unpopulated areas, makes up about a third of the municipal area, says Hebrew Wikipedia.
